Does this sound like you?

I've been learning English for some time now.

Pretty cool that I can have a conversation with others who are learning English.

I can read well too.

Well done ME! 😎

But wait ..!

When I speak to native speakers, I can't understand what they're saying!

I can follow some but not others. I get lost in the conversation.

I get so frustrated.

It's like they're not speaking English 😢

Relax, this is normal.

Learning a language has many parts to it:

  • Listening.
  • Speaking.
  • Grammar.
  • Hidden rules that make you sound fluent.
  • Idioms.
  • Double entendres (a word or phrase open to two meanings, one of which is usually risqué or indecent 😜).
  • Reading.
  • Writing.
  • Pronunciation.
  • Don't get me started on spelling!

There are many more factors that make up why we can speak and understand a language.

Hi, I’m Marie and I'm a Brit abroad!

I've moved to ... wait for it ... France - Yay!

France is an amazing place to live. Far from perfect, like every country in the world, but great all the same.

There are so many things I love about living here. Not the things you'd expect, by the way. I'm not a great fan of French food. Give me Italian, Indian, Chinese or Thai any day. Yummy ...😉 I can take or leave French wine. I couldn't tell you the difference between an expensive Bordeaux or a cheap red from another region! I still drink it though.

I live near the beautiful Pyrenees in the South of France.

Great for taking pictures 📷

Great for walking 🚶

Great for Cycling 🚲

But the coffee is utter rubbish! ☕😞

How is English Coach Marie different?

Oh, I'm glad you asked!

Well, one of the reasons I started, is to provide you - the English learner - with interesting writing lessons. You can learn English by actually using it. Your writing skills are crucial when it comes to the modern world. Messaging, e-mailing and IELTS exams all require you to write well. If you're interested in self-improvement, it could help you practise your writing skills.

Wherever you are on your journey, you'll always be learning.

By day, I teach English to Chinese children on the internet. I'm so lucky to have found a job that I love doing.

Obviously, I'm learning French. Learning a second language has helped me become a better teacher too. I know it's no easy task. I learn French by mixing it with something I enjoy. So, I learn French while cycling and walking with friends. I read French lifestyle blogs. I learn so much more by reading the things French speakers are reading. It's more interesting and more up to date than textbooks.

These methods have made a big difference to my experience of learning another language.

It's easy to overlook the FREE things available to us. Reading, listening and thinking. The first two - reading and listening - you can easily do on the internet. The third one  - thinking - I will talk about in the future sometime. You can download your FREE copy of "How To Think In English" here

Never underestimate what you can learn from yourself.

Anyway, are you bored yet? I am, let's finish this now. 😘
